The Barossa Valley is probably
of the best known Australian Wine Regions and when you mention wine territory
and South Australia in the same sentence; it is Barossa that comes to the mind
of most people. This is probably helped along by some of the big names, like
Jacob’s Creek, Yalumba, and Peter Lehmann to but a few who all have wineries in
the valley.

The Barossa Valley is an area
adjacent to the North Para River and encompasses the towns of Nuriootpa,
Tanunda, Rowland Flat and Lyndoch.
Due to me having to do the
driving not that much wine tasting was undertaken and it could almost be
thought of as a recce trip so scout the area before a short long weekend is
taken and spent in the valley.
Just outside Gumeracha on the
Torrens Valley Road one will find the Big Rocking Horse and a wonderful little
toy factory. This place is a must stopover for young and old alike. We spent a
wonderful hour wandering around the factory playing with the toys that they
have on display, some old and some new. Be warned – take your credit card with
you.
A stop at Jacob’s Creek Winery
is a must. Within the visitors centre they take you through the history of the
winery and then you have the opportunity to do some tasting and purchasing.
Within the grounds of the winery is also a majestic Blue Gum Tree said to be
over 300 years old.

From the top of Menglers Hill
outside Tanunda you get the very spectacular panorama over the Barossa Valley.
We stopped over at Chateau
Tanunda Estate in for a bit wine tasting and I can really recommend their wines
and they have a brilliant cellar.

With everything there is to see
and do the time passes by all too quickly and very soon we realised that it was
time to head back home. We will most definitely be back for a longer visit at
some time in the not too distant future.
Here you will find a few more photographs of this fleeting visit.
I have been to the Barossa Valley myself, which is going back a good 16 years, and found it fasinating, with real good German cuisine at one of the wineries, the name of which slips my mind. The wines are marketed all over the world with quite a few ending up in Sri Lanka as well!

Hi Jeffrey. Trust all is well with you. Yes not doubt the Barossa has changed a bit over the past 16 years, but it still remains a beautiful place to visit and we love going there. Fortunately it is just over a 2 hour drive for us so is a nice day out, even though each one turns into an expensive one. Besides the world renown wineries there are also many smaller boutique wineries and those are the real gems.
DeleteI just re-discovered this blog....it is outstanding !
ReplyDeletePost some more sometime.....I think you should do a vacation/holiday in western Australia soon :)
-- Robb (USA)
Hi Robb, glad you have made the discovery again. Western Australia is on the cards, but no promises when. Australia is quite a large land mass and for us to drive across the Nullabor is bit like doing Route 66 in the USA. Flying it not really an option as Perth is simply just another city and hiring cars for a 2 week excursion is perhaps a bit pricey.
